Visual Effects

Combining computer graphics and the real world

By definition, Visual Effects (VFX) covers the processes by which an image, film, or video material captured in reality is integrated and merged with a realistic image material created or manipulated outside the film. This visual material is mostly a computer generated image or a footage (CGI - Computer Generated Imagery). Such visual effects are needed when live filming of a given visual material would be dangerous, costly, or time consuming, or it would not be possible to create it without them.

The creation of visual effects does not necessarily mean a completely independent category of functions, as in many cases it is necessary to create 3D models, to set these models properly and to integrate them. For proper lighting of models, good workmanship of materials. In addition, animation and simulations may be required to make the final result excellent. When everything is in place, they need to be put together (composited) in such a way that in the end the customer and the viewer are satisfied.

For images, you don’t have to think of this process as someone starting Photoshop and making changes to an image. There, you have to draw everything in each picture separately, and in case of several pictures, you have to draw the same object several times, even from several angles. In the case of images, the advantage of the visual effect we create is shown when the same objects have to be inserted into images from several angles, 3-dimensional models have to be inserted, or several versions of objects have to be placed in the same position on one image. This is because the appropriate objects are created in the 3-dimensional space, and the virtual cameras are given settings and placed in the position where the real cameras were in reality. Or at least very close to it, as there are quite a few factors to consider in these. This is followed by merging the original images and the objects created on the computer into one image. A typical case of this is when we place the object or objects we create in a real environment.

In the case of videos, the repository of visual effects is a bit wider and the processes are more complex. This is 24-60 frames per second and certainly more than 1 second. In this case, other techniques must be used to perform the tasks but here also the basic task is to be able to track the movement of the camera used during live recording as accurately as possible. Once you have that, you can start with a lot of things with this technology. These visual effects can also be used to place objects in the videos as if they were already there, or, under certain conditions, to just take them out as if they were not there. You can replace an object with another, or put a caption or logo on a moving surface, or cover it up. The visual effects used in videos also play a much bigger role in animations and simulations, as they provide a much more spectacular visual world.

The price of visual effects depends on a lot of things. First, whether it’s photos or videos, the complexity of the task, such as the length of the video, the amount and quality of material received, and so on. So the bad news is that we can’t say an exact price for this in advance. The good news, however, is that in many cases we don’t even think about visual effects as a separate task, nor do we count on it, because, for example, in the case of a 3-dimensional model embedded in an image, it is a basic requirement that this task be done. Thus, even in this case, it is true that we can give a quote for a task with the knowledge of the project, but we are very happy and free to make it.
